Now I know we are.
I remember asking my dad what he did for fun.
He said, "work."
I wondered if he had ever really been a kid...
I didn't know any other girls that had to split wood.
I didn't know any other girls that knew what a D-saw was, or loppers, or how to prune trees.
I didn't know any other girls that had to mow acres of lawn, tar a driveway, shovel and snow blow in the winter.
The list goes on, but you get the point.
At times I was a even a little embarrassed. I didn't like it all that much.
But I did it because it was expected and necessary.
Now that I have my own children I realize why it was so good for us to have so much to do to help the family. WORK! Work is such a blessing and an opportunity. I loved working at home with my big sister, her kids, and my kids to help Grandpa get ready for the winter. We had a great time! ( And we slept and ate well too.)
I never thought I would say this but I actually enjoyed splitting wood with a mallet and wedge. Weird! (I felt like She-ra. The kids would cheer us on...I guess you had to be there but it made me feel strong.)
It was fun to see how much we could accomplish together and know that it would stay done for a while. (Unlike laundry, dishes, and cleaning which comes apart so soon after it is finished.)

That Karyn. She's a crazy woman up that ladder with a chainsaw. Yikes. Glad you had fun working hard. Sorry I missed the party!
Amen about Karyn and the chainsaw... and about being weird because we worked and knew about tools. You write so well and I love all the pictures you take! Thanks for sharing NY with us.
